FIREHOUSE CODE OF CONDUCT
The Firehouse Swing Dance is dedicated to providing a safe and positive environment for all dancers, regardless of gender, age, sexual orientation, ability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion (or lack thereof). Harassment of attendees or staff will not be tolerated. Examples of harassment include: offensive verbal comments (related to gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, OR religion), sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of classes/DJs/bands, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.
Any attendee or staff member violating these rules may be warned and/or removed from the dance either temporarily or permanently without refund. We reserve the right to inform other local dance venues of any permanent bans issued at the Firehouse Swing Dance in order to ensure the safety of our dance community as a whole
Reporting Harassment, Inappropriate or Disruptive Behavior
If you are being harassed, have witnessed another attendee being harassed, or have any other concerns you may choose to do the following:
The Do’s and Don’ts of the Firehouse Swing Dance
*DO feel free to ask anyone to dance! Mix it up and meet new people! Remember, follows can ask leads and leads can ask follows. And anybody can dance any role they choose- you can even switch!
*DO bring a change of clothes if you get sweaty! If you can see sweat through your shirt, it is time for change! You may wish to use a towel for your arms or forehead.
*DO keep it clean! Good hygiene is expected when social dancing.
*DO be respectful of each dancer’s personal space. Partner dancing involves touching and sometimes a closer connection, but some people may prefer more space. If a dancer asks for more space, please respect that.
*DO say “No” if you do not want to dance. You do not need to offer a reason why and you do not owe that dancer a dance later. If a dancer does not respect this, please speak to a staff member.
* DO apologize for any collisions on the dance floor. It’s important to be aware of other dancers on the floor. Some collisions are unavoidable. Make sure everyone is okay before continuing to dance. If someone is hurt, help them off of the floor and notify the front desk if first aid is needed.
* DO NOT touch someone inappropriately! Do not touch, grab or kiss your partner without their consent. You might accidentally graze another dancer while dancing. Be sure to apologize!
* DO NOT throw aerials on the dance floor. You place yourself and others at risk of injury and you will be asked to stop immediately.
* DO NOT come to the dance if you are sick! Just don’t do it!
*DO NOT provide feedback during class unless instructed to do so OR if your partner is hurting you. This also applies to social dancing unless your partner has asked for feedback.
*DO NOT pull another dancer onto the floor without first asking them to dance.
